Shanghai | Guide to 10 Best Shanghai Bike Streets

Shanghai’s traffic laws for scooters and bicycles have been updated and changed countless times this year. Restrictions on main roads makes cutting across town a lot more of a hassle, but you get to see some of the most charming streets the city has to offer. Here are 10 of the most beautiful ones.

Kangping Lu


If you want to get away from Xujiahui, chances are you will scooter through this road. Even on a bright summer’s day you can drive through this street without feeling the heat, especially with the canopy of trees on both ends.

Tianping Lu


Tianping Lu is also another quiet street that can give you a quick detour from Xuhui district to north of Yan’an Lu. Along this street you can find Old Jesse’s as well as craft cocktail bar Healer.

Wukang Lu


One of the major landmarks of Shanghai, Wukang Mansion stands at the crossroads of Huai Hai Lu, Wukang Lu and Xingguo Lu If you need a respite, there are plenty of things to see and do on Wukang Lu. If you need a quick recharge, you can grab a coffee at La Fini Nail Boutique and Café. Or, continue down on Xingguo Lu to find some little gems, or you can continue to peddle upwards on Wukang Lu and hit the neighborhoods around Anfu Lu.

Xingguo Lu

In the charming heart of the French Concession, Xingguo Lu also has a handful of restaurants and bars worth visiting, which is great as it is bike friendly. One of the restaurants is Bar No. 3. which offers sidewalk seating, perfect if you enjoy people watching.

Or you can also take a café at Rumors Coffee where there is a seating bench for you, and if you are bringing your furry best friend, it is also dog friendly.

Tai’an Lu


Another beautiful street to bike through is Tai’an Lu. It has the eclectic mix of French beauty with the full trees and quiet neighborhood, but it also has hip and urban vibes. It is the home of Heyday Jazz Bar, Daga  and Chez Maurice.

Hunan Lu


You would never expect a quiet little park here, but in the midst of all the overflowing green canopies, it feels like you are not in China.


Riding through Hunan Lu, it’s hard not to get hungry as you drive past a few of Shanghai’s finest establishments like, Nico’s Oyster and Lapis Thai.

And, if you have a sweet tooth, you will certainly find satisfaction in stopping over at Salon De Chocolat, or if you fancy a coffee you can be sure to find Rumors Coffee a quiet respite.

And if you fancy an evening drink, you can take a ride to Malt Fun Whisky Bar.

Yongfu Lu

Once a nightlife hotspot, it has mostly turned back to its more quaint and low-key roots now that The Shelter, The Apartment, El Coctel have shuttered. But, hidden in a corner, you can still find a spot to chill out and chug beers at Uptown Records n’ Beer.

But, if you want to see the true history of Yongfu Lu you can take a peek inside members only restaurant Yong Fu Elite. This was the former British Consulate, so the entire décor is European inspired and is very well kept.

Yuyuan Lu


It is no surprise that the beautiful villas of Yuyuan Lu make it a contender for the most beautiful street to bike through in Shanghai. But what is impressive about this road is that it’s a hub connecting Wulumuqi Lu, Beijing Lu and Yuyuan Lu.

There are many architectural gems on Yuyuan Lu that make the entire street charming. Going west on Yuyuan Lu towards Zhongshan park there are a few notable eateries well worth a stopover. The most popular is The Cannery which offer amazing craft cocktails and western cuisine.

But there are also plenty of famous restaurants on Yuyuan Lu within the villas that use the space to create private dining atmospheres. Step inside Fu 1015
and be transported back to 1920’s Shanghai.

Long Teng Lu


If you head towards West Bund, it is truly one of the most serene areas in town. Not only do you get to see a different view of the Pudong/Puxi skyline but, there is also hardly any traffic.

Although you cannot take the bike or scooter on the boardwalk, the drive is still as enjoyable, especially at night.

The weekends may be packed with people and their dogs near the Long Museum, but it is still a different scene worth exploring on a meandering bike ride.

Wai Ma Lu


Maybe you want to go to a place that has a waterfront and wonderful places to dine. Scootering on Wai Ma Lu is certainly not an issue. So scooter up and see another view that can be comparable to the Bund. Areas like Cool Docks are bustling with business and new places to eat.
