Chinese Breakfast Series: Fan Tuan

Welcome to the new weekly food discovery series. Experts say "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." At first glance, it seems like the Chinese food culture may have forgotten this golden rule. But look again. There are plenty of amazing Chinese breakfast options, and we will be featuring some of our favorites that can help you start your day, Chinese style.

Fan Tuan (饭团)


So what is Fan Tuan? It's pretty simple actually. Fan Tuan 饭团 literally means rice (Fan 饭) ball (tuan 团). It's fried dough (油条 Yóutiáo) and maybe some pork floss (肉松 Ròusōng) encased in sticky, glutinous rice. It's a sweet rice breakfast burrito!



There are a few variations to this delicious Chinese breakfast based on the region you get it in. You can get egg or meat on the inside. It can come long and skinny or in a ball. And even get flavored rice. Test out a few different ingredients to see which you like best.



Add sweet or savory soy milk to make fan tuan a complete breakfast, just like the locals of Eastern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. If you're lucky, some places will shape the fan tuan into fun things like hello kitty, minions or cute animals.

Shanghai becomes international talents' favorite city

Shanghai is the most favorite Chinese city for international talents, followed by Beijing, South China's Guangdong Province and East China's Jiangsu Province, according to a report on regional international talent competitiveness released on Monday. A comprehensive evaluation system was used to value a region's competitiveness of international talents in six dimensions – scale and structure of international talents, as well as innovation, policy, development and living environments. The report was conducted and released by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) and the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics' Institute of Development Studies. Zuckerberg looking for Mandarin-speaking nanny for $110,000/year

Rumors are currently running wild on Chinese social media that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is currently searching for a Mandarin-speaking nanny who will be extremely well compensated for her work. The rumors are linked to a job recruitment notice on the website  Indeed . com  which has recently been circulating around the WeChat groups of Chinese living and working in Silicon Valley. That notice for a nanny includes all of the requirements that you might expect: at least three years of experience, a bachelor's degree, a love for children and basic medical training. However, netizens have picked up on one detail that is a bit out of the ordinary -- the nanny must be fluent in Mandarin. According to the notice, the nanny will have to work five days straight (from 8am to 9pm) before getting five days off, and will be paid an annual salary of between $110,000 to $130,000 while receiving full health benefits similar to that of a Silicon Valley engineer. ...
