Shanghai | Guide to Bars Near Metro Stations


Shanghai’s metro is officially amazing. It seems like you barely have to walk above ground these days to get where you're going. Being slightly lazy people, we went looking for some of the bars and pubs that are within 500 metres of metro stations, here's what we found.

West Nanjing Road

80m: EZ5

EZ5 is just outside of exit 12 of West Nanjing road station. It’s a Taiwanese jazz joint, originally established back in 1991. Their Feng Sheng Li venue offers a big stage and lounge for live music and cocktails in a classy, sultry environment.

130m: Goose Island Brewhouse

If you walk a little further from exit 12, you will find yourself in beer heaven: Goose Island Brewhouse. This place has 2 floors, over 40 beer taps at the exquisite long bar on the first floor, serving over 15 types of drafts from Goose Island. You can also sit on the cozy sofas on the second floor to enjoy delicious food cooked by chef Gabriel Rodriguez.

180m: Zhang Yuan

If you enjoy vibrant late nights and cocktails, just take exit 4, with only a 2 minute walk you’ll find Taixing lu 99. Enjoy a special cocktail at Logan's Punch, with their vibrant environment, or go for whisky cocktails at El Ocho. Also if you like to chug beer, Tap House is right there and at your service. 

Jing’an Temple

Lucky You! Everyone’s favorite dive bar just so happens to be one hop skip and a jump from the metro. With a bunch of TVs, a pool table, (very) cheap drinks and often times some sketchy characters, it’s a must for those too lazy to walk further than a couple hundred meters. 

220m: Calypso
Address: Jing'an Shangri-la, 1218 Yan'an Zhong Lu, near Tongren Lu

This spot boasts a wide variety of Mediterranean, especially Italian cuisine. They’ve also got some incredible drinks and they're a stone’s throw away from the metro station.

396m: Dr. Beer
Address: 83 Fumin Lu, Jing'an district

Walk up from Jing'an's exit 9, and cross busy Yanan zhong lu, Dr. Beer is just around the corner... sort of. Dr. Beer is the microbrewery sister of nearby Dr. Wine, it serves a small range of very good, brewed on-site pilsners and ales in a livelier, sleeker environment. They also serve a selection of typical grilled bar foods and pizzas.

Changshu Road

280m: Senator Saloon

Take exit 8 of Changshu road Station, turn onto Wuyuan lu, and Senator Saloon is a breezy 280 meters away. Inspired by speakeasies, its interior is dark with wood floors, wine-red curtains and sectioned off with booths and a tiny bar area. The menu is mainly bourbon-based drinks and more than 50 types of whisky to choose from. You can also have some ryes, infusions and other strong mixes. Food is mainly based on classy American bar snacks.

South Shaanxi Road
40m: M64
Address: 141 South Shaanxi Lu

40 meters from exit 8 of South Shaanxi Road station, you'll find M64. It’s another speakeasy bar hiding inside of the echo café. After walking through the entrance behind the waterwall, you will find yourself in a two storey venue with a huge dance floor. M64’s theme is astrology, from the decor to their Zodiac cocktails. 

587m: Barules

Barules is a speakeasy bar on Fengyang Lu. If you see people disappearing behind an out-of-place red phone booth, then you have found the right spot. Barules is a British cocktail bar with a Prohibition theme. The concept is to completely trust the bartender. They take cocktail preparation very seriously here.

This 'Award Winning' bar has been the top choice for cocktail lovers in Shanghai for almost 4 years. UTC is like a laboratory for crazy mixologists. What do they serve will always surprise you.

Changping Road

420m: Mokkos 2

The neighborhood Japanese bar Mokkos is just 6 minutes walk from exit 5 of Changping Road Station. Mokkos doesn’t have a huge space but it really provides intimacy. Their cocktails, sake, and soju concoctions are basically a love story for your palette. Coffee, plum, papaya a full range of flavor in delicate mixtures. 

Xintiandi Station

170m: Mr. Shaker

Mr. Shaker is a dark, cool and cozy cocktail bar that serves classics, as well as inventive concoctions for reasonable prices. The low lighting, fun cocktails and understated décor: featuring Godfather inspired artwork, make this a great neighborhood watering hole. 

440m: Devil's Share

This low-key cocktail lounge in the heart of Xintiandi offers cocktails on par with any other place in the city. 

Heng Shan Lu

10m: XO Bar 
Address: 237 Heng Shan Lu, near Yongjia Lu

XO Bar might be the closest bar to the metro station: it’s only 10 meters from exit 1 at Xujiahui Station. From the guys behind wine & beer delivery app BottlesXO, this bar is great for hanging out and grabbing a glass of wine. They've got lots of wines by the bottle and glass, and craft beers from Germany, Italy and France. It opens onto the street, has a bit of outdoor seating, and is connected to the restaurant upstairs, so you can get a bite to eat too.

390m: Zapata's

390m from Hengshan Road Station, Zapata's is the place for people who want to drink and partyyyyyyy. Every night the Zapata's DJs turn the volume up and the cantina becomes a bustling free-for-all with a hip crowd of all ages, a vast dance floor and Bar-top dancing to the latest hits.
